What's wrong with Bubic?


The 2018 MLB draft class for Kansas City has been quite shaky from Brady Singer to Kris Bubic. The Royals drafted Singer, Jackson Kowar, Daniel Lynch, Jon Heasley, and Bubic along with other college arms. The Royals selected the left hander out of Stanford University where he posted a great 2.62 ERA his junior year before getting selected by the Royals. Bubic quickly made his way through the Royals minor league system before reaching the majors in 2020. Unfortunately for Bubic and many other minor leaguers, the pandemic definitely impacted their developmental process. The Stanford graduate only pitched in nine games for Lexington before getting the call up to the majors by the Royals. The 24-year old posted an ERA of 4.32 in his rookie season with Kansas City. Following the end of his rookie campaign, Bubic posted a 4.43 ERAin 29 games and 20 starts. The Royals let Bubic begin his third year in Omaha, where he posted a miserable 6.59 ERA in only three starts before getting recalled to the majors. The Royals, in my opinion, must let Bubic work on his craft before throwing him into a big league rotation. The team has nothing to lose by letting the young starter play in Omaha for the remainder of the season allowing him to work on his craft with no pressure from the big league team needing him to become a star right out of the gate. The Royals definitely should consider letting Bubic find himself and sign a free agent pitcher to take his spot in the rotation for the remainder of the season. While Bubic has had a few good starts for the big league club, Bubic would definitely benefit from more time in Omaha. According to nationalsarmrace.com: "AAA: Typical Age range is 23-24. Age 25 depends.  26+ is old.” Bubic is twenty-four years old, meaning it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Royals to let Bubic finish the rest of the season and maybe let him begin next season in the minors. While I believe Bubic would definitely benefit from more time in the minors, the Royals definitely need to make a pitching coach change in the big leagues to maybe prevent Bubic and the other young arms from becoming busts for the team.

Tyler Duffey hit or miss signing for Royals

The boys in blue are looking to boost the bullpen through the minor league free agent market, and Kansas City signed a familiar arm, Tyler Duffey, to a minor league pact. Duffey spent time in the Cubs’ organization last season; however, his last big league stint was with the Twins. The 32-year old was a member of the Twins pitching staff for seven seasons before signing with the Cubs last season. Duffey was designated for assignment by Minnesota on August 5 and released just two days later. The righthander, in my opinion, is a type of pitcher that could boost the pen next season. Last season, Duffey spent most of the season in Triple-A. While in Iowa, Duffey appeared in 36 games and threw a total of 45.1 innings. Duffey started two games for Iowa last season. The decision for the Twins to move on from Duffey was difficult for the organization and rightfully so. The organization had plenty to say about Duffey following his departure from the team. A well traveled arm could boost the Royals’ pen

Kansas City will likely be signing many pitchers to minor league deals this offseason. Spring Training this season will be fun to watch as many arms will be competing for a spot in a wide open bullpen. Matt Wisler in my opinion would fit the Royals’ bullpen perfectly, and he would be cheap. Wisler and the Kansas City coaching staff are familiar with each other. The veteran righthander was a member of the Rays’ bullpen in 2021 along with 2022, and he had good numbers. Wisler's time with Tampa Bay came to a surprising end after being designated for assignment in September of 2022. The 31-year old had good numbers while a member of the Rays bullpen staff. He posted an ERA of 2.25 with 35 punchouts in 44 innings pitched. Following the end of Wisler's tenure with the Ray, he signed minor league deals with the Tigers and the Blue Jays.
