Reyes could be good signing for Royals

Kansas City has been busy adding pieces to their rotation and bullpen but not so much for the offense. However, the team did recently sign former slugger Franmil Reyes to a minor league pact with an invite to spring training. The minor league contract isn't the only benefit the Royals get in the deal, they also get two years of control if he sticks with the big league club. Reyes coming to Kansas City in many ways is a head scratcher for a team that looks to have most of their key players lined up for the upcoming season, but I believe the Reyes signing could benefit this young Royals team. The deal works out for both the Royals and Reyes, if the slugger doesn't make the team out of spring training, he can ask for his release and test the open market. The deal with Reyes also is good for the team because a minor league deal isn't guaranteed. Although the signing is a minor league agreement, Reyes could bring plenty to the team. Unfortunately last season was a complete disaster for Reyes. The Guardians designated Reyes for assignment in August of last season due to his offensive struggles. While with Cleveland last season, the 27-year old hit a .221 between the Guardians and the Cubs with 14 home runs and 47 runs batted in. Despite the slugger's struggles in 2022 between Cleveland and Chicago, he still can be a major threat in a team's starting nine. Unfortunately for Reyes, Kansas City doesn't have many openings on the roster for him heading into this season. On the other hand, Reyes has an opportunity to rewrite his career with a team that is still trying to figure out who is part of their future plans. Reyes in my opinion would make a great designated hitter for the boys in blue. Kansas City heading into 2023 has a good chance of having a lot of pop in their lineup with Salvador Perez, Hunter Dozier, MJ Melendez and others. It seems to be unclear what Reye's role with the Royals could be heading into Cactus League play, but I think we could definitely see the slugger get some good looks at designated hitter when MJ Melendez and Salvador Perez are playing behind the plate or in the outfield.
